What's an Emulsion?

What's an Emulsion?

Just when I think I got a handle all on these different product types, Serum, Ampoules, Toners, and Essences.  Then Emulsion came along.  Well it's been around but I've always assumed in belonged to the Serum, Ampoules, Essence bunch.

But What Is an Emulsion in Skincare?

An emulsion is a lightweight, milky moisturizer made from a blend of oil and water. It delivers hydration without the heaviness of a traditional cream, absorbing quickly into the skin and leaving a soft, balanced finish.

Because of its fluid texture, an emulsion works especially well for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin, but it’s also a smart layering step for dry skin. When used under a richer moisturizer, it adds hydration while helping the skin retain moisture more effectively.

In Korean skincare routines, emulsions are considered an essential step that bridges treatment products and moisturizers—sealing in serums without clogging pores or overwhelming the skin.

Skincare Layering Order: Thinnest to Thickest

Layering skincare products correctly helps each formula absorb properly and perform as intended. The general rule is simple: apply products from the thinnest texture to the thickest.

Where Does Emulsion Fit in a Skincare Routine?

An emulsion is applied after serums and before creams. It adds hydration without heaviness and helps smooth the transition from active treatments to moisturizing steps.

If you have oily skin, an emulsion can sometimes replace a cream entirely. For dry or dehydrated skin, it works best layered underneath a richer moisturizer for added comfort and moisture retention.

Why Korean Skincare Uses Multiple Layers

The Korean skincare approach focuses on hydration, skin barrier health, and long-term results, rather than harsh treatments or quick fixes.

Hydration First

Instead of one heavy cream, multiple lightweight layers allow hydration to reach the skin gradually. This layering method helps create the smooth, luminous look often referred to as glass skin.

Customizable for Your Skin

One of the biggest advantages of having different product textures is flexibility. On humid days, a toner, serum, and emulsion may be enough. In colder or drier weather, adding a cream on top helps prevent moisture loss.

Prevention Over Correction

Korean skincare emphasizes maintaining healthy skin before issues arise. By supporting the skin barrier and keeping skin consistently hydrated, concerns like dryness, irritation, and premature aging are less likely to develop.
